Ben Turok is a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist. He was born on 26 June 1927 in the Socialist Soviet Republic of Byelorussia. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and served as a Member of Parliament from 1994 to 2014. Turok was educated at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and political science. He was a member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) from 1951 to 1990. Turok was a leader of the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, and was arrested in 1963 for his involvement in the struggle against apartheid. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was released in 1973. Turok was a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee from 1985 to 1990 and was elected to the ANC's National Working Committee in 1991. He was elected to the South African Parliament in 1994 and served as a Member of Parliament until 2014. Turok is the author of several books, including The Struggle for South Africa (1984), The ANC and the Liberation Struggle (1989), and The ANC and the Transformation of South Africa (1995). He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of Luthuli in Silver (2005) and the Order of the Baobab in Silver (2008).
