He is best known for his work on prostaglandins and related biologically active substances. He studied medicine at the University of Lund and received his medical degree in 1960. He then went on to do research at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, where he worked on prostaglandins and related biologically active substances. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with Sune Bergström and John Vane, for their discoveries concerning prostaglandins and related substances. He has held numerous positions in academia, including professor of biochemistry at the University of Lund, professor of medical chemistry at the Karolinska Institute, and professor of biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg.
