Bennie Edens is an American football coach who has been involved in the sport for over 60 years. He began his career as a high school coach in San Diego, California, and has since coached at the college and professional levels. He is best known for his time as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1978 to 1986. Edens was born on December 7, 1925 in San Diego, California. He attended San Diego High School, where he played football and basketball. After graduating, he attended San Diego State University, where he played football and earned a degree in physical education. Edens began his coaching career in 1952 as an assistant coach at San Diego High School. He then moved on to coach at San Diego State University from 1954 to 1957. In 1958, he became the head coach of the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League. He led the team to two AFL championships in 1963 and 1964. In 1965, Edens moved on to coach the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. He coached the team for three seasons before returning to the Chargers in 1978. He coached the Chargers for eight seasons, leading them to the playoffs four times. Edens retired from coaching in 1986 and was inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions in 1987. He was also inducted into the San Diego State University Hall of Fame in 1988. As of 2021, Bennie Edens is 83 years old and has a net worth of $2 million.

2008

After 10 years of retirement, Edens died of a heart attack in early February 2008. Obituaries called him "a legend", and his memorial service, held at the Point Loma High athletic field, filled the stadium that bears his name to capacity. Following his death, Point Loma High School established the Bennie Edens Scholarship Fund in his honor.

1955

Edens became head coach of the Pointers in 1955, and continued in that role though several generations of students until his retirement in 1998. He finished his career with a record of 241–168–16, a sectional record for the most wins by a coach a single school, and second on the sectional all-time list. His teams won CIF championships five times during his tenure, in 1962, 1966, 1982, 1987 and 1991.

Edens lived his entire life in San Diego, California. He attended Hoover High School, where he played football and boxed. Graduating from Hoover in 1944, he then attended San Diego State University, where he played football. He graduated from SDSU in 1948 and began a career at Point Loma High School as a student teacher, while also working at the Kona Kai Club as the activities director and swim instructor.
