He is best known for his involvement in the development of the British retail chain, Marks & Spencer. Born on 10 February 1926 in London, England, Bernard Lewis is the son of a Jewish tailor. He attended the City of London School and then went on to study at the London School of Economics. After graduating, he joined the family business, a tailoring firm, and eventually became a partner. In the 1950s, Lewis began to invest in the retail industry, and in 1961 he became a director of Marks & Spencer. He was instrumental in the company's expansion and growth, and in the 1970s he became the company's chairman. Under his leadership, Marks & Spencer became one of the most successful retail chains in the UK. In addition to his business career, Lewis has also been involved in philanthropy and has served as a trustee of several charities. He is also a patron of the Jewish Museum in London.
