Bernt Balchen was a Norwegian-American aviator, navigator, engineer, and polar explorer. He was born in Tveit, Norway, on October 23, 1899. He was the first person to fly over the South Pole, and he was also the first to fly an airplane over the North Pole. Balchen served in the Norwegian Army during World War I, and then joined the Norwegian Air Force in 1921. He was a pioneer in the development of polar aviation, and he was the first to fly an airplane over the North Pole in 1926. He also flew over the South Pole in 1929, and was the first to fly an airplane over the Arctic Ocean. Balchen was a member of several expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and he was the first to fly an airplane over the Antarctic continent in 1935. He was also a member of the first expedition to traverse the Northwest Passage by air in 1937. Balchen was awarded the Medal of Honor by the United States in 1945 for his service during World War II. He was also awarded the Order of St. Olav by Norway in 1947. Bernt Balchen died on October 17, 1973, in Oslo, Norway. He was 73 years old.
