He is best known for his work with jazz fusion and funk bands, including the Brecker Brothers, Steps Ahead, and the Yellowjackets. He has also performed with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Chick Corea. Dickens began playing bass at the age of 12 and was soon performing with local jazz and blues bands. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and graduated in 1979. After college, he moved to New York City and began performing with jazz and fusion bands. Dickens has released several solo albums, including "The Bill Dickens Band" (1985), "Live at the Baked Potato" (1995), and "Live at the Iridium" (2005). He has also appeared on numerous albums by other artists, including the Brecker Brothers, Steps Ahead, and the Yellowjackets. Dickens is currently based in Los Angeles, CA, and continues to perform and record with various artists.
