Koning was born in Redding, California, and attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied film and television production. After graduating, he worked as a production assistant on various television shows and films, including the television series The X-Files and the film The Last House on the Left. Koning made his directorial debut with the horror film The Last House on the Left in 2009. He followed this up with the horror-thriller The Crazies in 2010, and the science-fiction horror film The Purge in 2013. He has also directed episodes of the television series The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, and The Purge. Koning has won several awards for his work, including the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film for The Last House on the Left, and the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film for The Purge.
