Birt Acres was an American photographer and inventor who was born on July 23, 1854 in Richmond, Virginia. He is best known for his invention of the first motion picture camera in the United States. Acres was a self-taught photographer and inventor who began experimenting with photography in the late 1870s. He was a member of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. In 1891, Acres invented the first motion picture camera in the United States. He called it the "Kinetoscope" and it was the first device to capture and store motion pictures on film. Acres also invented the first projector for motion pictures, which he called the "Kinetograph". Acres was a pioneer in the development of motion picture technology and his inventions were used by Thomas Edison and the Edison Manufacturing Company. He was also a founding member of the American Society of Cinematographers. Acres died on April 15, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was 63 years old.
