At the BBC, Armstrong worked as a producer and director on a variety of programmes, including the documentary series Monitor. He left the BBC in 1967 to pursue a career in feature films. Armstrong's first feature film was The Wicker Man (1973), which he wrote and produced. The film was a critical and commercial success, and is now considered a cult classic. He followed this up with The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), which he wrote and produced. The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for two Academy Awards.
