He was born in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from the University of Washington in 1945 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He joined Boeing in 1947 and worked on the design of the B-47 Stratojet bomber and the B-52 Stratofortress bomber. He was also involved in the development of the 707, 727, 737, 747, and 767 aircraft.
