Brigitte Oertel is a German fencer who was born on 11 October, 1953 in Braunweiler, Germany. She is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won a gold medal in the team foil event at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, and a bronze medal in the individual foil event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She also won a silver medal in the team foil event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Oertel began fencing at the age of 12 and was a member of the German national team from 1972 to 1988. She won the individual foil event at the World Championships in 1979 and 1981, and the team foil event at the World Championships in 1979, 1981, and 1983. She also won the individual foil event at the European Championships in 1979 and 1981, and the team foil event at the European Championships in 1979, 1981, and 1983. Oertel retired from competitive fencing in 1988 and has since worked as a fencing coach. She currently resides in Berlin, Germany.
