Byron Haskin was an American film director, special effects artist, and cinematographer. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on April 22, 1899. He began his career in the film industry in the 1920s, working as a cinematographer and special effects artist on a number of silent films. He then moved into directing, and his first feature film was the 1933 drama The Silver Streak. Haskin went on to direct a number of classic films, including the science fiction classic The War of the Worlds (1953), the western The Naked Spur (1953), and the adventure film Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964). He also directed the classic Disney film Treasure Island (1950). Haskin was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Special Effects for his work on The War of the Worlds. He was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Special Effects for his work on Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Byron Haskin died on April 17, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 84. His net worth at the time of his death is unknown.

1960

In the 1960s Haskin directed several episodes of The Outer Limits (1963) science-fiction series, including The Outer Limits: Demon with a Glass Hand (1964), a favorite among the show's fans, written by Harlan Ellison. The long-awaited sequel, "Demon on the Run", was scheduled to have been shown on the television series, Babylon 5 (1993), sometime in 1997 or 1998, but sadly it was never filmed.

1954

Haskin would collaborate with Pal on three other films, The Naked Jungle (1954), Conquest of Space (1955) and The Power (1968).

1953

In the mid-'50s Haskin began a rewarding association with producer George Pal, for whom he shot what is probably his best-known film, the science-fiction classic The War of the Worlds (1953).

1950

He returned to directing, and was responsible for Walt Disney's first live-action film, Treasure Island (1950).

1920

After graduation from the University of California at Berkeley, Byron Haskin worked for a time as a newspaper cartoonist. He began his career in the film industry in 1920 as a commercial-industrial movie photographer, and then as a cameraman for Pathe and International Newsreel. Later he became an assistant director at Selznick Pictures. He was a cinematographer during the silent era, worked on special effects and helped to develop the technology that eventually brought sound to the film industry.

He began directing in the late 1920s at Warner Brothers and journeyed to England in the early 1930s to make films there. Upon his return he was appointed head of the Warner Brothers Special Effects department.
