Cahit Önel was born in Istanbul, Turkey on November 23, 1927. He is a former long-distance runner who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. He was the first Turkish athlete to compete in the Olympics. Önel began his running career in the 1940s, competing in local races in Istanbul. He won the Istanbul Marathon in 1951 and 1952, and was the first Turkish athlete to win the race. He also won the Istanbul Cross Country Championship in 1951 and 1952. In 1952, Önel was selected to represent Turkey in the Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He competed in the men's 5000 meters, finishing in 11th place. Önel continued to compete in local races in Istanbul until the late 1950s. He retired from competitive running in the 1960s and went on to become a successful businessman. Önel is now 93 years old and is still living in Istanbul. He is remembered as a pioneer of Turkish athletics and is considered to be one of the most successful Turkish athletes of all time.
