Calvin Tomkins is an American writer and art critic. He is best known for his biographies of artists and his writing for The New Yorker. He was born on December 17, 1925 in Orange, New Jersey. Tomkins attended Princeton University, where he studied English literature and graduated in 1947. After college, he worked as a reporter for The New York Times and then as an editor for Time magazine. In 1960, he joined The New Yorker, where he wrote profiles of artists and other cultural figures. Tomkins has written several books, including biographies of artists Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns. He has also written books on the history of modern art, including The Bride and the Bachelors and Lives of the Artists. Tomkins has received numerous awards for his writing, including the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism in 1998 and the National Magazine Award for Reporting in 2000.
