Captain Martin Van Buren Bates was an American actor and sideshow performer who was known as the "Kentucky Giant" due to his immense height. He was born on November 9, 1837 in Letcher County, Kentucky. He was the son of a farmer and was the tallest man in the United States during his lifetime. He stood at 7 feet 11 inches tall and weighed over 500 pounds. Bates began his career as a sideshow performer in the late 1850s. He toured with P.T. Barnum's circus and was known as the "Giant of the Hills". He was also known as the "Giants of Seville" due to his performances in Spain. He was a popular attraction and was featured in many newspapers and magazines. Bates married Anna Swan in 1871. Swan was also a giant and stood at 7 feet 6 inches tall. Together, they had two children, both of whom were of average height. Bates died on January 7, 1919 in Seville, Ohio. He was 81 years old.
