He moved to Hollywood in the 1920s and worked as a cinematographer on films such as The Cat and the Canary (1927), The Last Warning (1929), and The Cat Creeps (1930). He also wrote the screenplay for the 1931 film The Mad Genius. Koch continued to work in Hollywood throughout the 1930s and 1940s, working as a cinematographer on films such as The Invisible Man Returns (1940), The Mummy's Hand (1940), and The Mummy's Tomb (1942). He also wrote the screenplay for the 1941 film The Wolf Man. Koch's last credited work was as a cinematographer on the 1951 film The Thing from Another World. He died on April 15, 1956 in Los Angeles, California. At the time of his death, Koch had an estimated net worth of $1 million.
