Carlos Arias Navarro was a Spanish politician and diplomat who served as Prime Minister of Spain from 1973 to 1975. He was born in Madrid on 11 December 1908, the son of a military officer. He studied law at the University of Madrid and joined the Spanish Army in 1931. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and served in the Spanish Civil War. After the war, he became a member of the Spanish Parliament and was appointed Minister of the Interior in 1945. He was later appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and held the post until 1951. He was also a member of the Spanish Senate from 1951 to 1973. In 1973, he was appointed Prime Minister of Spain by King Juan Carlos I. He served in this position until 1975, when he was replaced by Adolfo Suarez. During his tenure, he was responsible for the transition from the Francoist dictatorship to a democratic government. After leaving office, he served as Spanish Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1975 to 1977. He died in Madrid on 8 April 2008 at the age of 99.
