Carol Guzy is an American photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer. She was born on March 7, 1956 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Bethlehem Catholic High School in 1974 and attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where she earned a degree in journalism in 1978. Guzy began her career as a photographer for the Miami Herald in 1980. She has since worked for the Washington Post, the Associated Press, and the Sygma Photo News Agency. She has covered major news events around the world, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the famine in Somalia, the civil war in El Salvador, the earthquake in Haiti, and the revolution in Romania. In 1986, Guzy became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for her coverage of the 1985 eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia. She has also won four National Press Photographers Association Pictures of the Year awards, two World Press Photo awards, and numerous other awards. Guzy is currently a freelance photographer based in Washington, D.C. She is married to fellow photographer Robert Cohen and has two children.

In August 2007, Guzy's photos of animals left behind on the Gulf Coast, where she spent months in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, were included in a three-artist benefit exhibit titled "Lest We Forget: Three Perspectives on Hurricane Katrina" at the Discovery Too art gallery in Bethesda, Maryland.

She graduated with an Associate degree in nursing from Northampton Community College in 1977, and planned to work as a nurse until a friend gave her a camera. In 1980, she earned an associate degree in applied science in photography from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Afterward she became an intern, and then a photographer, at The Miami Herald. She married UPI photographer Jonathan Utz in 1988. That year she also moved to The Washington Post, following her husband to a job in the city. They divorced in 1998.
