She is the former CEO of Novamont, a leading Italian bioplastics company, and the current CEO of the Italian Institute of Technology. She is also a professor of industrial biotechnology at the University of Bologna. Bastioli was born in Foligno, Italy, and earned her degree in chemistry from the University of Bologna in 1981. She then went on to earn her PhD in industrial biotechnology from the same university in 1985. Bastioli has held various positions in the biotechnology industry, including as the CEO of Novamont from 2002 to 2018. During her tenure, she helped the company become a leader in the bioplastics industry. She also served as the president of the European Bioplastics Association from 2008 to 2012. In 2018, Bastioli was appointed as the CEO of the Italian Institute of Technology. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing the institute's research and development activities. Bastioli has received numerous awards for her work in the biotechnology industry, including the European Inventor Award in 2017 and the Global Bioplastics Award in 2018. She was also named one of the world's most influential people in biotechnology by the MIT Technology Review in 2019.
