He is one of the most important figures in Brazilian popular music, having composed and arranged for some of the most important artists in the country, such as Elis Regina, Gal Costa, and Milton Nascimento. He has also composed soundtracks for films, television series, and theater plays. Mariano was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on September 19, 1943. He began studying music at the age of seven, and by the age of twelve he was already playing in nightclubs. He studied classical music at the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo, and later studied jazz at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mariano has composed and arranged for some of the most important artists in Brazilian popular music, such as Elis Regina, Gal Costa, and Milton Nascimento. He has also composed soundtracks for films, television series, and theater plays. He has won several awards, including the Latin Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Album in 2004, and the Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album in 2006.
