Cheech Marin is an American actor, comedian, writer, and activist. He is best known for his work in the comedy duo Cheech & Chong, as well as his roles in films such as Up in Smoke, Born in East L.A., and The Lion King. Marin was born in Los Angeles, California, to Oscar Marin, a policeman in the LAPD, and Elsa, a secretary. He is of Mexican descent. He attended Bishop Alemany High School, and later studied at San Fernando Valley State College, where he received a BA in English. Marin began his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1970s, and soon became part of the comedy duo Cheech & Chong. The duo released several successful comedy albums and starred in several films, including Up in Smoke, Nice Dreams, and Still Smokin'. In addition to his work with Cheech & Chong, Marin has had a successful solo career. He has appeared in films such as Born in East L.A., Tin Cup, The Lion King, and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. He has also provided voice work for several animated films, including Cars, Cars 2, and Coco. Marin is also an activist, and has been involved in several causes, including the legalization of marijuana and the protection of endangered species. He is also a philanthropist, and has donated to several charities, including the American Red Cross and the United Way.
