Chris Marker was a French writer, photographer, documentary filmmaker, multimedia artist and film essayist. He is best known for his 1962 short film La Jetée, which won the Prix Jean Vigo and was later adapted into the 1995 feature film 12 Monkeys. He was also known for his multimedia works, such as the CD-ROM Immemory and the short film Sans Soleil. Marker was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine, France, on 29 July 1921. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and was a member of the French Communist Party. He served in the French Army during World War II and was a member of the French Resistance. Marker began his career as a journalist and photographer in the late 1940s. He wrote for the magazine Esprit and worked as a photographer for the magazine Paris Match. He also wrote and directed several short films, including the 1962 short film La Jetée, which won the Prix Jean Vigo. Marker's later works included the multimedia works Immemory and the short film Sans Soleil. He also wrote and directed several feature films, including Le Joli Mai and Level Five. Marker died on 29 July 2012 in Paris, France, at the age of 91.
