Christopher Shays is a former American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1987 to 2009. He was born on October 18, 1945 in Stamford, Connecticut. He attended the University of Bridgeport and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. Shays was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1987 and served until 2009. During his time in Congress, he was a member of the Republican Party and served on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Financial Services Committee, and the House Committee on Government Reform. Shays was a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility and was a leader in the effort to reduce the federal budget deficit. He also supported the Iraq War and was a vocal critic of the Bush administration's handling of the war. Shays has been married to Betsi Shays since 1967 and they have two children. He currently resides in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
