Colin Low is a Canadian filmmaker and producer who has been active in the film industry since the 1950s. He is best known for his work on the National Film Board of Canada's (NFB) documentary series, The World in Action. Low has won numerous awards for his work, including an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for his film, The Man Who Skied Down Everest. Low was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada on July 24, 1926. He attended the University of Alberta, where he studied engineering. After graduating, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a navigator during World War II. After the war, he returned to Canada and began working in the film industry. Low's first major project was the NFB's The World in Action series, which he produced and directed from 1956 to 1965. The series was a groundbreaking documentary series that explored a variety of topics, including science, politics, and culture. Low's work on the series earned him an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for his film, The Man Who Skied Down Everest. Low has also worked on a number of other projects, including the feature films The Far Shore (1976) and The Grey Fox (1982). He has also produced and directed a number of short films, including the award-winning short film, The Cat Came Back (1988). Low has been recognized for his work with numerous awards, including the Order of Canada, the Governor General's Award, and the Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. At the age of 90, Low is still actively involved in the film industry. He continues to produce and direct films, and is currently working on a feature-length documentary about the life of Canadian artist, Emily Carr.

In 2002, the Large Format Cinema Association presented Low and the NFB with its Abel Gance Award for outstanding work in large format filmmaking.

1996

In 1996, Low was made a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to cinema in Canada and around the world. In 1997, he was given the Prix Albert-Tessier, given to individuals for an outstanding career in Québec cinema. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

1972

In 1972, he received the Grierson Award at the Canadian Film Awards for "an outstanding contribution to Canadian cinema."

1960

In 1960, Low and Roman Kroitor co-directed Universe, capturing the attention of Stanley Kubrick, who was preparing to make 2001: A Space Odyssey. Low was invited to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey but had to decline due to his work on In the Labyrinth, a multi-screen production for Expo 67—though some of Low's ideas were incorporated into Kubrick's film.

1957

Low received his second Palme d'Or for best short film at the Cannes Film Festival, along with another BAFTA award and Oscar nomination for his 1957 documentary, City of Gold, on the Klondike Gold Rush, co-directed with Wolf Koenig. City of Gold made use of slow pans and zooms across archival photos and has been cited by Ken Burns as a key inspiration for the so-called Ken Burns effect.

1954

His 1954 documentary Corral received was named best documentary at the Venice Film Festival. He followed that with a second documentary shot in southern Alberta, the 1960 film Circle of the Sun, which marked the first time the Kainai Nation's sacred Sun Dance was filmed.

1952

Low's 1952 animated short, The Romance of Transportation in Canada, won a Short Film Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, a special BAFTA Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Subject, Cartoons.
