Colin Patterson is a British paleontologist and evolutionary biologist who is best known for his work on the evolutionary history of vertebrates. He is the author of several books, including Cladistics and Evolution and The Evolution of Vertebrates. He is also the founder of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing, China. Patterson was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and studied zoology at the University of Cambridge. He then went on to work at the British Museum of Natural History, where he worked on the evolutionary history of vertebrates. He was appointed as the Keeper of the Department of Zoology in 1978. Patterson has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Darwin Medal from the Royal Society in 1988, the Linnean Medal from the Linnean Society in 1989, and the Darwin-Wallace Medal from the Linnean Society in 2008. He was also awarded the Darwin-Wallace Medal from the Royal Society in 2009. Patterson is currently a professor at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing, China. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Linnean Society. He is married to the paleontologist and evolutionary biologist, Dr. Mary Schweitzer.
