Collis Temple is an American college basketball coach and former player. He was born on 8 November 1952 in Kentwood, Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University, where he played college basketball for the LSU Tigers from 1971 to 1975. He was a two-time All-SEC selection and was named the SEC Player of the Year in 1975. After college, Temple was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1975 NBA Draft, but he never played in the NBA. Instead, he began his coaching career at his alma mater, LSU, in 1976. He served as an assistant coach for the Tigers for four seasons before becoming the head coach in 1980. He coached the Tigers for six seasons, leading them to the NCAA Tournament in 1983 and 1984. In 1986, Temple left LSU to become the head coach at the University of New Orleans. He coached the Privateers for four seasons before leaving in 1990. He then served as an assistant coach at the University of Arizona for two seasons before becoming the head coach at the University of Idaho in 1992. He coached the Vandals for four seasons before leaving in 1996. Temple then returned to LSU as an assistant coach in 1997 and served in that role until his retirement in 2017. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. As of 2021, Collis Temple's net worth is estimated to be roughly $2 million.

Temple was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 94th pick of the 1974 NBA draft. He spent one season (1974–75) with the San Antonio Spurs of the American Basketball Association. He averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 24 games. In February 1975, he joined the Iberia Superstars of the European Professional Basketball League.

1971

The Kentwood, Louisiana native was the first African-American to play varsity basketball at Louisiana State University (LSU). When he joined the team in 1971, the United States National Guard was called to protect him from angry segregationists. As a senior, Temple earned All-Southeastern Conference honors after averaging 15.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. In 2017, Temple was elected to the Louisiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
