Connie Mack was an American professional baseball player, manager, and team owner. He began his Major League Baseball (MLB) career as a catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1886. He then went on to manage the Philadelphia Athletics from 1901 to 1950, winning nine American League (AL) pennants and five World Series championships. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. Mack was born in East Brookfield, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1862. He was the son of Irish immigrants John and Mary McGillicuddy. He attended local schools and worked as a clerk in a shoe store before beginning his professional baseball career. Mack began his professional baseball career in 1884 with the minor league Meriden (Connecticut) team. He then joined the Pittsburgh Alleghenys of the National League in 1886. He played catcher for the Alleghenys until 1896, when he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. He played for the Orioles until 1898, when he was released. Mack then began his managerial career with the Milwaukee Brewers of the Western League in 1899. He managed the team for two seasons before being hired by the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901. He managed the Athletics for the next 50 years, leading them to nine AL pennants and five World Series championships. Mack retired from managing in 1950 and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. He died on February 8, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
