Dan Wallin was born in Los Angeles, California, United States, on 13 March 1927. He was the son of a Swedish immigrant father and a mother of German descent. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950. Wallin began his career as an engineer at the Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City, California. He worked on the development of the first radar systems for the U.S. Air Force. He then moved to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, where he worked on the development of the first interplanetary probes. In the late 1950s, Wallin joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he taught electrical engineering and computer science. He was a professor at UCLA for more than 30 years, and he was the founding director of the UCLA Computer Science Department. Wallin was a pioneer in the field of computer science, and he was instrumental in the development of the first computer networks. He was also a leader in the development of the first computer graphics systems. Wallin was a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He was awarded the IEEE Computer Pioneer Award in 1997. Wallin is now retired and lives in Los Angeles. He is 96 years old.
