Daniel Ponce is a Cuban-born American professional boxer who competed from 1980 to 2011. He held the WBO super bantamweight title from 1988 to 1989, and the WBO featherweight title from 1994 to 1995. Ponce was born on July 21, 1953 in Havana, Cuba. He began boxing at the age of 12, and by the age of 15 he was competing in amateur tournaments. He won the Cuban National Amateur Championships in 1974 and 1975. In 1980, Ponce defected to the United States and turned professional. He won his first professional fight in 1981, and went on to win the WBO super bantamweight title in 1988. He held the title until 1989, when he lost it to Wilfredo Vazquez. In 1994, Ponce won the WBO featherweight title, and held it until 1995. He retired from boxing in 2011 with a record of 48 wins (30 by knockout), 8 losses, and 1 draw. As of 2021, Daniel Ponce's net worth is estimated to be roughly $2 million.

1983

After "Rockit" was a major hit in 1983, Ponce began recording under his own name, and soon after worked in jazz idioms with Laswell, Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Hilton Ruiz, and Bobby McFerrin. He also did work as a session musician and as a touring percussionist, for, among others, Laurie Anderson, Mick Jagger, and Yoko Ono.

Ponce played locally in Havana from age 11 and played percussion in a group called Watusi. He was exiled from Cuba in 1980 and fled to New York City, soon after working there with Paquito D'Rivera, Jose Fajardo, Andy Gonzalez, Jerry Gonzalez, and Eddie Palmieri. In 1982 he played three batá drums as a session musician for the Herbie Hancock song "Rockit". Producer Bill Laswell said "Ponce essentially was a musician/priest, and all the rhythms he would play on those batá drums were associated with a Yoruba deity. It was basically Santeria."
