Daniele Mastrogiacomo is an Italian journalist and author. He was born in Karachi, Pakistan, on 30 September 1954. He is best known for his work as a war correspondent in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mastrogiacomo began his career as a journalist in the early 1980s, working for the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. He has since reported from many of the world's conflict zones, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, and the former Yugoslavia. In 2007, Mastrogiacomo was kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan and held for two weeks. He was released after the Italian government negotiated his release in exchange for five Taliban prisoners. Mastrogiacomo has written several books about his experiences as a war correspondent, including "The Taliban's Prisoner" and "The Long Road Home". He is also the author of the novel "The Last Day of the War". Mastrogiacomo is currently 70 years old. He has not revealed his current net worth.

2007

On 5 March 2007, Mastrogiacomo along with Afghan journalist, Ajmal Naqshbandi, and an Afghan driver, Sayed Agha, was on his way to Taliban controlled southern Afghanistan after being promised an interview with a Taliban commander. They were kidnapped by Mullah Dadullah's men. The events that followed are shown in the documentary "Fixer: The Taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi" and recounted in Mastrogiacomo's book, "Days of fear".

Ajmal Naqshbandi was not released, and on 8 April 2007 he was beheaded.

On, 12 May 2007 Mullah Dadullah as well as two of the Taliban commanders who were released in exchange for Mastrogiacomo were killed by a US-led action. They included Mullah Hamdullah and Mullah Ghafar.

An expert in foreign politics, he began working for la Repubblica in 1980 and has been a special international reporter since 1992. Mastrogiacomo reported on events such as police operation Mani Pulite, the Marta Russo murder and the Priebke affair. He has worked in Afghanistan, Iran, the Palestinian territories, Iraq and Somalia. In 2006 he reported on the Lebanon war.
