He attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a degree in journalism. Molinari has written several books about the NHL, including The Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the Penguins (1995), The Complete History of the Stanley Cup (1998), and The Official NHL 75th Anniversary Commemorative Book (1999). He has also written for several magazines, including Sports Illustrated and The Hockey News. Molinari is married to his wife, Mary, and they have two children. He currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
