He is best known for his powerlifting accomplishments, including setting the world record for the bench press in the 198-pound weight class in 1982. Waddington began his powerlifting career in the 1970s and quickly rose to prominence in the sport. He won the World Powerlifting Championships in 1982 and 1983, and set the world record for the bench press in the 198-pound weight class in 1982. He also competed in strongman competitions, winning the World's Strongest Man in 1985. Waddington has since retired from competitive powerlifting and strongman, but he still remains active in the sport. He is a member of the International Powerlifting Federation Hall of Fame and the International Federation of Strength Athletes Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Powerlifting Hall of Fame.
