David Awschalom is an American physicist and professor at the University of Chicago. He is a leading expert in the field of quantum information science and spintronics. He is the Liew Family Professor of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, and a Senior Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. Awschalom received his B.S. in physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1978 and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the IBM Almaden Research Center from 1983 to 1985. Awschalom has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Academy of Sciences Award in Molecular Biology, the National Academy of Sciences Award in Applied Physics, the National Medal of Science, the Wolf Prize in Physics, and the Kavli Prize in Nanoscience. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Sciences. Awschalom is married to physicist and professor Marissa Awschalom. They have two children.
