David Barnes is a New Zealand sailor who was born on 27 April, 1958 in Wellington, New Zealand. He is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won a silver medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and a bronze medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He is also a four-time world champion in the Finn class. Barnes began sailing at the age of 12 and was a member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. He competed in the Finn class at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where he won a silver medal. He also competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he won a bronze medal. Barnes has also won four world championships in the Finn class, in 1985, 1987, 1989, and 1991. He was also the first New Zealander to win a world championship in the Finn class. Barnes is currently the president of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. He is also a member of the International Sailing Federation's Hall of Fame.
