He attended the High School of Performing Arts and then went on to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Shepherd began his acting career in the 1950s, appearing in small roles in films such as The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). He also had a recurring role in the television series The Rockford Files (1974-1980). In the 1980s, Shepherd appeared in films such as The Deer Hunter (1978), The Big Red One (1980), and The Right Stuff (1983). He also had a recurring role in the television series The A-Team (1983-1987). In the 1990s, Shepherd appeared in films such as The Firm (1993), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and The Green Mile (1999). He also had a recurring role in the television series The Golden Girls (1985-1992). Shepherd has been married twice and has two children. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
