Dean Acheson was an American statesman and lawyer. He served as the United States Secretary of State from 1949 to 1953 under President Harry S. Truman. Acheson helped design the Marshall Plan and was a key player in the development of the Truman Doctrine and creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He also played a central role in the Korean War. Acheson was born in Middletown, Connecticut, on April 11, 1893. He attended Yale University, where he was a member of the Skull and Bones secret society, and then Harvard Law School. After graduating from Harvard, he joined a law firm in Washington, D.C. Acheson's career in public service began in 1933 when he was appointed Undersecretary of the Treasury. He then served as Assistant Secretary of State from 1941 to 1945. In 1949, President Truman appointed Acheson as Secretary of State. During his tenure, Acheson was instrumental in the development of the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and the creation of NATO. He also played a key role in the Korean War. Acheson retired from public service in 1953 and returned to private law practice. He died on October 12, 1971, in Sandy Spring, Maryland.
