DeVan Dallas was born to a sharecropper family in Troy, Mississippi. He attended the local schools and graduated from high school in 1944. After high school, he joined the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, he attended Mississippi State University and graduated with a degree in business administration. In 1952, Dallas was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives, where he served for two terms. In 1956, he was elected to the Mississippi Senate, where he served for two terms. In 1964, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served for four terms. In 1972, Dallas was appointed to the United States Senate, where he served for two terms. During his time in the Senate, he was a strong advocate for civil rights and was a leader in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1982, Dallas retired from politics and returned to Mississippi, where he has remained active in civic and charitable organizations. He is currently the chairman of the DeVan Dallas Foundation, which provides scholarships to students from his home state. As of 2021, DeVan Dallas is 90 years old and has a net worth of $2 million.
