He attended the University of Minnesota, where he played football and earned a degree in physical education. Crum began his coaching career at the University of Minnesota in 1954, where he served as an assistant coach for two years. He then moved to the University of Iowa, where he served as an assistant coach for three years. In 1959, he was hired as the head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. He coached the Tar Heels for five seasons, leading them to a record of 33-27-1. In 1964, Crum moved to the University of Miami, where he served as an assistant coach for two years. In 1966, he was hired as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes. He coached the Hurricanes for nine seasons, leading them to a record of 73-7-1. During his tenure, the Hurricanes won two national championships and four conference championships. Crum retired from coaching in 1975 and returned to the University of Minnesota, where he served as a professor of physical education until his retirement in 1995. Crum is 77 years old. 1950

Crum was a dancer, technical adviser, and choreographer with the Duquesne University Tamburitzans starting in 1950. He was named program director of the Festival of Nations at St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1952. He also consulted and choreographed for the AMAN Folk Ensemble.

In the early 1950s, his popularity as an international folk dance teacher increased rapidly. He did research on folk dances in the Balkans, visiting there seven times. He taught not only dances from the Balkans, but also Slovenian couple dances and other European dances.
