He is best known for his success in the sport of cross-country skiing, having won multiple medals in the World Championships and the Winter Olympics. Atanasov began skiing at the age of seven and quickly developed a passion for the sport. He competed in his first international competition in 1948, and went on to win multiple medals in the World Championships and the Winter Olympics. He won a gold medal in the 10 km event at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, and a bronze medal in the 4 x 10 km relay at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California. Atanasov retired from competitive skiing in 1965, but continued to be involved in the sport as a coach and mentor. He was inducted into the International Ski Federation Hall of Fame in 1997.
