Dolly Parton is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actress, author, and philanthropist. She is one of the most successful female country music artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. She has won eight Grammy Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and two Country Music Association Awards. She has also been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Parton was born on January 19, 1946 in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. She began performing at an early age, singing on local radio and television programs in the East Tennessee area. She moved to Nashville in 1964 and signed with Monument Records in 1965. Her first single, "Dumb Blonde," was released in 1967 and became a hit.
Parton has released over 40 studio albums, including her most recent, Pure & Simple, in 2016. Following the television movie, she was to develop a sitcom where she would star as a "caterer to the stars," which would have aired as Mindin' My Own Business (1996), but the pilot was never broadcast.
