Doris 'Dorie' Miller was an African-American sailor in the United States Navy. He was the first African-American to be awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Miller was born in Waco, Texas, on October 12, 1919. He was the son of Connery and Henrietta Miller. He had two brothers and two sisters. Miller joined the Navy in 1939 and was assigned to the battleship USS West Virginia. On December 7, 1941, Miller was on duty in the ship's mess hall when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He rushed to his battle station, but it had been destroyed. He then began carrying wounded sailors to safety and helped move ammunition. For his actions, he was awarded the Navy Cross, the highest honor given to a sailor. Miller continued to serve in the Navy until 1945. After the war, he returned to Waco and worked as a cook. He died in November 1943, at the age of 24, when his ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine. Miller's legacy lives on in the form of the Doris Miller Memorial at Pearl Harbor, which was dedicated in 1973. He is also remembered in the naming of the USS Doris Miller, a guided missile destroyer, in 1973.
