Dorothy Bennett was an American writer and editor. She was born in DeKalb, Indiana, and attended the University of Chicago, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1929. She then went on to pursue a master's degree in English at the University of Wisconsin. Bennett began her career as a writer and editor for the Chicago Tribune in 1932. She wrote a column for the paper called "The Bookshelf," which focused on books and authors. She also wrote book reviews and feature articles for the Tribune. In 1941, Bennett moved to New York City and began working as an editor for the publishing house Macmillan. She worked there for over 20 years, editing books by authors such as John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, and Ernest Hemingway. In 1962, Bennett left Macmillan and began working as an editor for the publishing house Random House. She worked there until her retirement in 1972. Throughout her career, Bennett wrote several books, including The Art of Reading (1951), The Art of Writing (1954), and The Art of Editing (1962). Dorothy Bennett died on April 15, 1995, in New York City.
