Earl Long was an American politician who served as the 40th Governor of Louisiana from 1939 to 1940 and from 1948 to 1952. He was the younger brother of Huey Long, who preceded him in the Louisiana governor's office, and the older brother of George S. Long, who succeeded him. Earl Long was born on August 26, 1895, in Winnfield, Louisiana, to Huey Pierce Long, Sr. and Caledonia Palestine Tison. He attended Louisiana State University and Tulane University, but did not graduate from either. In 1924, Long was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, where he served until 1928. He was then elected to the Louisiana Senate, where he served until 1932. In 1932, Long was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until 1940. In 1939, Long was elected Governor of Louisiana, and he served until 1940. He was re-elected in 1948 and served until 1952. During his tenure, he implemented a number of progressive reforms, including the establishment of a minimum wage, the expansion of the state's highway system, and the creation of a state-funded health care system. Earl Long died on September 5, 1960, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was 65 years old.
