Edouard Saouma is a Lebanese-American agronomist and former Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on 6 November 1926. Saouma studied agronomy at the American University of Beirut and earned a Ph.D. in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin in 1954. He then worked as a professor of plant pathology at the American University of Beirut and as a research scientist at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). In 1979, Saouma was appointed Director-General of the FAO, a position he held until 1994. During his tenure, he was credited with helping to improve food security in developing countries and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. He also worked to improve the FAO's financial situation and to increase its efficiency. Saouma has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the World Food Prize in 1995. He is a member of the International Food Policy Research Institute's Board of Trustees and the International Advisory Council of the International Food Policy Research Institute.
