Edwin H. Armstrong was an American electrical engineer and inventor who is best known for his pioneering work in radio technology. He developed the regenerative circuit, the superheterodyne receiver, and FM radio. He was also a major contributor to the development of radar. Armstrong was born in New York City in 1890. He attended Columbia University, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1913. Armstrong's first major invention was the regenerative circuit, which he patented in 1914. This circuit allowed for the amplification of weak radio signals, making it possible to receive signals from distant stations. He also developed the superheterodyne receiver, which was the first practical radio receiver. In 1933, Armstrong developed FM radio, which provided superior sound quality and was less prone to interference than AM radio. He was awarded the National Medal of Merit in 1941 for his contributions to radio technology. Armstrong died in 1954 at the age of 63. He was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1975.
