Elisabeth Beskow was a Swedish author and illustrator of children's books. She was born on 19 November 1870 in Stockholm, Sweden. She was the daughter of a pastor and grew up in a rural environment. She studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm and later at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich. Beskow wrote and illustrated over 40 books for children, many of which are still in print today. Her most famous works include Peter and Lotta's Adventure, The Sun Egg, and The Land of Long Ago. She was also a prolific illustrator of other authors' works, including those of Selma Lagerlöf and Astrid Lindgren. Beskow was awarded the Nils Holgersson Plaque in 1954 and the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1956. She died on 11 April 1953 in Stockholm.
