Elizabeth Tallent is an American author and professor of English at Stanford University. She was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in the suburbs of Maryland. She attended the University of Maryland, where she earned her B.A. in English in 1976. She then went on to earn her M.A. in English from the University of Virginia in 1978 and her Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983. Tallent is the author of four books of fiction, including the novel Mendocino Fire (1995) and the short story collections Time with Children (1987), In Constant Flight (1998), and Honey (2013). She has also published numerous essays and stories in magazines and journals, including The New Yorker, Harper's, The Atlantic, and The Paris Review. Tallent has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Award, and a Pushcart Prize. Her memoir Scratched was released in 2020 from Harper. Mendocino Fire, her first collection of short stories in more than 20 years, was published in October 2015. The New York Times Book Review praised Tallent's "ability to create characters who force us to withhold judgment and leave us gasping at their absolute, solid reality." Publishers Weekly called the volume "a smart, thought-provoking study of desire and disappointment." Tin House described it as "driving, furious, erotic, gilded, the sentences flying at you like arrows." The collection is a finalist for the 2016 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.

In 2007 she was awarded Stanford's Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Award, and in 2008 she received the Northern California Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa's Excellence in Teaching Award, recognizing "the extraordinary gifts, diligence, and amplitude of spirit that mark the best in teaching." In 2009 she was honored with Stanford's Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching.
