Emlyn A. G. Watkins was a British physicist and professor of physics at the University of Manchester. He was born in 1926 and died in 2010. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. Watkins was educated at the University of Manchester, where he obtained a BSc in Physics in 1947 and a PhD in 1950. He then worked at the University of Manchester as a lecturer in physics from 1950 to 1956, and as a professor of physics from 1956 to 1991. Watkins was a pioneer in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and was the first to measure the NMR of a solid. He was also the first to measure the NMR of a liquid, and the first to measure the NMR of a gas. He was awarded the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society in 1975 for his work on NMR. Watkins was also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was awarded the Faraday Medal of the Institute of Physics in 1991. Watkins was married to Margaret Watkins, with whom he had two children. He died in 2010 at the age of 84.
