Engalaguppe Seetharamiah Venkataramiah was an Indian scientist and engineer who was born on 18 December 1924 in India. He was a pioneer in the field of aerospace engineering and was the first Indian to be inducted into the International Academy of Astronautics. He was also the first Indian to be awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award. Venkataramiah was educated at the University of Mysore and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He was a professor at the Indian Institute of Science and was the first Indian to be appointed as the Director of the National Aerospace Laboratories. He was also the first Indian to be appointed as the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation. Venkataramiah was a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, the National Aeronautics Award, and the International Academy of Astronautics Award. He was also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Venkataramiah passed away on 28 April 2018 at the age of 93.
