He is also the first Turkish athlete to win an Olympic medal. Barkay began his career as a hurdler in the 1950s and quickly rose to prominence, winning the European Championships in 1954 and 1958. He also won the World Championships in 1958 and 1962, and the Olympic Games in 1960. He was the first Turkish athlete to win an Olympic medal, taking the bronze in the 110m hurdles in 1960.
